Melmoth the Wanderer

After striking a deal with the Devil, Sebastian Melmoth spends his extended lifetime searching the world for someone to take his place in the Faustian bargain. Written in 1820 by an Anglican priest, this Gothic novel consists of several tales-within-a-tale. Enthusiasts of the brooding melodrama include Balzac, Poe, Dostoyevsky, and Baudelaire. About the Author Dublin native Charles Robert Maturin (1782 - 1824) was a clergyman whose novels were highly influenced by the Gothic romances of the late eighteenth century. After the initial success of a theatrical production of his tragedy Bertram, Maturin's works fell into obscurity until their reemergence in the 1890's.
